Wedding at Chelsea Square

Chelsea Square

429 W 20th St, New York, NY(646) 392-8195

Chelsea Square — also known as Events at Chelsea Square — is one of those wedding venues in Manhattan that feels like a hidden oasis tucked into the heart of the city. Set within a historic block that once belonged to the General Theological Seminary, the space combines classic red-brick architecture, lush private gardens, and cathedral-like interiors with modern event design that’s both elegant and personal.

Stepping into Chelsea Square feels like stepping away from the bustle of the city and into a charming world of textured spaces and layered beauty — from serene garden enclaves to a breathtaking refectory with dramatic staircases and towering stained glass.  Whether you imagine a ceremony in a historic chapel, a cocktail hour in a sun-lit courtyard, or a reception beneath high ceilings that capture the spirit of the place, the venue lends both romance and depth to every part of the day.

The property dates back to the 1800s and was originally part of the General Theological Seminary campus. Through time, these brick and stone buildings — rooted in rich history — have become one of New York’s most distinctive event spaces, offering couples a blend of timeless character and contemporary warmth

MY Experience Photographing Weddings at Chelsea Square

My team and I have photographed weddings at Chelsea Square, and one of the first things that always strikes me is how every part of the space feels layered with possibility. There’s a poetry in the contrast between the cathedral-like Refectory with its Gothic paneling and stained glass, the quiet gardens tucked away from the street, and the elegant chapel that gives each moment a different visual identity.

As a photographer, I love how these transitions naturally shape a day — from tender prep portraits in garden light, to ceremony under classic architectural detail, to animated celebrations where light and shadow dance off textured walls. The gardens give a sense of gentle quiet that’s perfect for portraits or candid moments, while the interior spaces feel rich and cinematic without overpowering the emotion of the day.

I especially remember a spring wedding where the couple chose to do their first look in the garden just as morning light filtered through the blossoms. Later that day, the reception in the Refectory felt grand yet deeply personal, with warm tones and classic silhouettes framing every smile and embrace. Moments like that make Chelsea Square feel alive with narrative — not just a pretty place, but a space that holds the story of the day.
